Resentment remains visibly strong between Ligue 1 and Canal +, its former historic broadcaster. As the fourth channel celebrates its 40th anniversary this November 4, its president Maxime Saada broadcast on his social networks a trailer in the style of a television series which looks back on the great moments in the history of Canal. Among these… the divorce with Ligue 1.
In a brief scene between two interlocutors, we hear one say: “We did everything for French football, is that how we are thanked? “. ” How much ? », Retorts the other. “A billion! », replies the first, mimicking the gesture of madness. “It's not just Ligue 1,” says the second, while the video then shows images of Formula 1, one of Canal's great sports successes in recent years.
Relations have been stormy to say the least between the League and Canal since 2020, and the call for tenders which saw the arrival as main broadcaster of the championship of Téléfoot, the channel managed by Mediapro. After the latter's bankruptcy, the League chose to sell, at a discount, its rights to Amazon, further incurring the wrath of its historic broadcaster, who felt wronged since he was paying more than the American giant to broadcast fewer matches.
Canal, which broadcast Ligue 1 without interruption from 1984 to 2024, did not participate in the call for tenders for the period 2024-2029, which went to DAZN and BeIN Sports, for the first time in its history .
