Deadly floods in Spain: a woman remains stuck in her car for 3 days with the body of her deceased sister-in-law

A little hope for Spanish rescuers. They saved the life of a woman who had been stuck in her car for 3 days. The vehicle was stuck in an underpass in Benetússer in southeastern Spain. Trapped by the heavy flooding and the power of the water, the driver could not get out. She was locked inside with the body of her deceased sister-in-law.

Spanish Civil Protection volunteers were working on a street when they heard cries for help. Approaching the place where the screams were coming from, an area where several vehicles were piled up on top of each other, they located the driver, explained to the Spanish media the president of Civil Protection Martín Pérez, still covered in mud .

Rescuers had to make great efforts to free the woman from the wreckage of her vehicle. She went to a health service to receive treatment. Neither the identity nor the state of health of this white-haired woman have been made public.

213 dead, 10,000 police and soldiers

Firefighters, police, Guardia Civil, soldiers and volunteers continue tirelessly to help victims and search for missing people. 4,800 rescue operations have been carried out, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced at a press conference on Saturday morning. 10,000 additional police, gendarmes and soldiers are mobilized.

The latest official flood toll is 213 dead. Authorities expect the death toll to rise as bodies are found in car wrecks piled up in tunnels and underground parking lots. In many communities, piles of mud-covered cars and debris remain on the roadways. The exact number of missing people remains unknown.

New torrential rains announced

The Spanish meteorological agency Aemet has issued a new orange alert for heavy rains in the Valencia region, particularly in the Valencian conurbation, where 100 liters of water per square meter could fall. A red alert was even issued for the province of Almeria, in Andalusia (south), due to “torrential rains” likely to cause “floods”.

Pedro Sánchez, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia arrived this Sunday noon at the scene of the floods, in Paiporta, near Valencia, one of the most bereaved cities. The sovereigns must then go to Chiva, another city near Valencia.
