Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said on Saturday that the death toll due to massive floods in the southern and eastern regions of the country had risen slightly to 207 people.
The minister updated the death toll in the worst floods Spain has witnessed in decades, in statements he made to the Spanish channel “Cadena Ser.” The previous death toll was 205 people.
The minister added that he expects the number to rise in the coming hours, as search operations continue in the most affected areas.
At least 204 people died in the Valencia region alone. It was reported that there were 3 other deaths in the regions of Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia.
There are fears that more dead will be found in cars swept away by torrents that flooded towns and caused rivers to overflow earlier this week.
More than 1,700 soldiers are assisting in rescue efforts in the Valencia region. Thousands of volunteers also came forward to assist local emergency crews.
