Winning the Classic against Feyenoord and leader PSV in one week; Ajax is getting better and better in shape. Defensively it was already much better than last season, but now that the players also find each other much better offensively, Francesco Farioli’s team can easily compete with the top. The meeting between the numbers one and two of the Eredivisie ended in 3-2. The difference in points (Ajax still has a match in hand) is ‘only’ five points.
Just like against Feyenoord, it looked fresh on Saturday evening at Ajax, which was much better than PSV in the first half. Peter Bosz’s team suffered a lot of loss of ball and had enormous difficulty with the beautiful attacks of the Amsterdam team. The goal that the team from Amsterdam conceded came out of nowhere but was also hardly defensible. There had been extra training, coach Francesco Farioli said beforehand, but Luuk de Jong’s hard header was untenable. It was the eighth time in a row that De Jong scored in a match against Ajax, no player has achieved that before.
Davy Klaassen’s equalizer just before half time was more than deserved. A great cross from Jorrel Hato landed perfectly on the head of ‘Mister opening goal Ajax’. Ajax also showed resilience after Ivan Perisic’s clever 1-2 from distance. An Amsterdam rush caused PSV a lot of headaches. At the leader, midfielders Jerdy Schouten and Joey Veerman were sorely missed and Malik Tillman, Matteo Dams and Rick Karsdorp, among others, were not in the match at all.
Kian Fitz-Jim crowned an excellent match with the 2-2, after which Ajax smelled blood. A gift from goalkeeper Walter Benitez and Malik Tillman allowed Mika Godts to score fifteen minutes before the end and PSV lost for the first time this season.
