After the victory over Feyenoord in the Classic on Wednesday (0-2), Ajax also beat leader PSV. The Amsterdam team came back from a 1-2 deficit in the Johan Cruijff Arena and won 3-2.
After a disastrous last season, Ajax is back at the top of the Premier League. Despite the first Premier League defeat of the season, PSV remains in first place, but Ajax follows on five points with one match less played.
After defusing Feyenoord in the Classic, Ajax coach Francesco Farioli had the task today of coming up with a plan to stop PSV. For example, he had specially trained to stop leading specialist Luuk de Jong.
Who else than Luuk de Jong
Despite all the exercises, De Jong still found the net. The PSV captain headed beautifully and hard into the intersection from a corner kick by Noa Lang. The striker has now scored in eight consecutive matches against the Amsterdam team, an unprecedented series.
Remarkably, the goal in the 18th minute was one of PSV's few highlights in the first half. De Jong had already come close several times before that, but he fell just short or hit the ball wrong. A shot by Lang was just saved by Remko Pasveer.
It was Ajax that had the better of the game in the first act and with a lot of energy and movement outpaced PSV. Kian Fitz-Jim, the replacement for the not entirely fit Kenneth Taylor, had two good shots after he moved in from the left.
Bertrand Traoré created a threat with his actions from the right and striker Brian Brobbey fought physical duels with PSV defender Ryan Flamingo, who received a yellow card for his second offense.
After PSV keeper Walter Benítez saved on chances from Devyne Rensch and Brobbey, Ajax leveled through Davy Klaassen. Jorrel Hato was given plenty of space to cross and Klaassen headed in after a smart running action between Flamingo and Olivier Boscagli.
Substitute Godts match winner
With substitute Mauro Júnior for Matteo Dams, PSV regained control after the break. After Luuk de Jong (34) and Davy Klaassen (31), it was again a crafty veteran who found the net. The Croatian Ivan Perisic (35) shot neatly and neatly into the corner with his left: 1-2.
Ajax once again did not give in and did not have to, because in the open and exciting match anything was possible. After a miss by Ismael Saibari on one side, the goal fell on the other side. Traoré's effort was saved by Benítez, after which Fitz-Jim shot hard and high.
With Taylor for goalscorer Fitz-Jim and Wout Weghorst for Brobbey, Farioli went for more against PSV.
A horrible mistake by Malik Tillman led to Mika Godts' winning goal. During a risky build-up attempt, the American simply handed the ball over and the Belgian substitute punished the mistake mercilessly in the 74th minute.
PSV could not recover from that blow. Taylor hit the post and Benitez saved on Godts' shot. The victory was not in danger. Farioli's Ajax inflicted a rare defeat on PSV, only the second Premier League defeat under coach Peter Bosz.
