Before/after: roads, bridges, buildings… An entire region to rebuild following the floods in Spain

Reaching the disaster areas is an obstacle course as it has been difficult to get around since the floods.

Many roads are still cut and bridges destroyed.

It is a titanic project which has begun in the province of Valencia to try to clear what can be cleared and restore traffic.

Totally destroyed railway tracks, cut bridges, piles of cars on the main roads. Half of Valencia's regional rail network is impassable following the floods, and several months of work will be necessary before there is any hope of a return to normal. For now, the emergency concerns the roads and motorways, but clearing the mud will not be enough, it will be necessary to rebuild, as the TF1 team observed on the Paiporta viaduct.

It is still unclear how long it will take to repair all these bridges around Valencia. In the report at the top of this article, workers estimate that this could take months or even years. Some bridges have completely disappeared, torn away by the violence of the floods, and they will have to be rebuilt anew.

Seen from the sky, we see that the structures of around ten bridges and viaducts are seriously compromised. At least eighty kilometers of roads and highways will have to be reconstructed, and no engineer has yet ventured to estimate the duration of the titanic work that will be necessary. Other crucial infrastructure, water and gas networks are also heavily affected. A photo taken by satellite shows the Valencia sewage plant, itself invaded by mud. Before even starting the immense road reconstruction project, it will still be necessary to remove the thousands of vehicles which still clutter the main highway which links Valencia to Barcelona.
