Alexander Zverev states how he’ll feel if he beats Carlos Alcaraz to year end number two ranking

Alexander Zverev spoke on the possibility of finishing as World number two ahead of Carlos Alcaraz.

2024 marked the German’s first full season on tour since returning to action following his devastating ankle injury sustained at the 2022 French Open.

Zverev won a Masters 1000 title in Rome and reached his second Grand Slam final in what has been a steady year.

His consistency throughout the campaign means he can still finish the season directly behind World number one Jannik Sinner in the world rankings.

Alexander Zverev reacts to potentially finishing World number two ahead of Carlos Alcaraz

Alexander Zverev has failed to reach the quarter-finals at a tournament on just four occasions in 2024.

That level of consistency has seen him climb back to World number three and he is just 315 points behind Carlos Alcaraz.

While there is still a chance to finish the season ahead of the Spaniard, Zverev made an honest admission about his season compared to Alcaraz.

“I mean, for sure they are No. 1 and 2 right now. You can see that they both won two Grand Slams this year, so there is no question about that,” Zverev told reporters at the Masters when asked about Alcaraz and Sinner.

“You know, even if I finish ahead of Carlos this year, which is still a possibility, you know, I still believe that they’re No. 1 and 2, just by the things that they have achieved, right?”

Comparing Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz’s 2024 seasons

While Zverev has maintained a high level of consistency throughout the season, Alcaraz has been consistent in his own right, and claimed some of the game’s biggest honours.

The 27-year-old claimed one title in 2024, while Alcaraz has claimed four, two of which were Grand Slams.

The Murcia native won the Indian Wells Masters 1000 title in March and went three months before winning his second title of the season.

Weeks after Zverev triumphed in Rome, Alcaraz overcame him in five sets to win the French Open, before successfully defending his Wimbledon title.

The 21-year-old then secured the Olympic silver medal, and claimed his most recent title in China, after winning an epic final against Sinner in Beijing.
