Green floating layer on Reien: “But no danger to humans and animals” (Bruges)

The city has received several reports about the floating layer in recent days. Mayor Dirk De fauw (CD&V) emphasizes that duckweed, a plant that naturally occurs in stagnant water, poses no risk to humans and animals and is even edible for water birds. (Read more below the photo)

“The duckweed has mainly been able to develop in the Kapucijnenrei, a zone with relatively stagnant water. Due to a number of circumstances, the water system was not flushed from the inner vest for a while, which promoted the growth of duckweed,” says De fauw.

The flushing of the Reien has now been resumed. “The duckweed will also be transported towards the Dampoort. It is expected that the Reien will be completely free of duckweed again within about a week.” (ktb)
