Sony plans to make the PS5 last a long time

Sony hopes that the PlayStation 5 can last ten years, a long cycle in the console market. The more powerful Pro model could help guarantee such longevity.

In a few days, the PlayStation 5 will – already – celebrate its four years of existence. It will soon be joined in the range by the PS5 Pro, a more powerful model, intended for the most demanding (and wealthy) gamers. As Hideaki Nishino recalled in the columns of Variety on October 31, the PS5 Pro is not a new generation. “ The PS5 Pro will do everything the PS5 can do. It’s a choice for consumers. If they want the best graphics, then they will choose it “, he explains.

In reality, the PS5 Pro is also there to help the generation last for ten years. In any case, this is Hideaki Nishino’s wish. He states on this subject: “ We design everything a step in advance. We have not just taken one step forward without knowing the next two. This is not the way we operate, because we must ensure that our current generation, designed for 10 years, continues to do well. »

Can the PS5 really last 10 years?

Please note, Hideaki Nishino's words do not mean that the PlayStation 6 will be released ten years after the PS5 – that is to say in 2030. Today, video games continue to be published on the PlayStation 4, which dates from 2013. We are thinking of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 or even to EA Sports FC 25. In the history of Sony – and consoles in general – no PlayStation has been released ten years after the other.

Here is the PlayStation home console schedule :

  • PlayStation, Sortie en 1994 ;
  • PlayStation 2, sortie and 2000 ;
  • PlayStation 3, Sortie en 2006 ;
  • PlayStation 4, Sortie en 2013 ;
  • PlayStation 4 Pro, Sortie en 2016 ;
  • PlayStation 5, sortie en 2020 ;
  • PlayStation 5 Pro, sortie en 2024.

Excluding the Pro version, PlayStation-branded home consoles give way after a cycle of six to seven years – which does not correspond to total abandonment. If Sony sticks to these statistics, then the PS6 could be released by 2027, or even 2028, then respecting cohabitation with the PS5 generation for two to three years. Cohabitation which, incidentally, makes the €800 invested in the Pro version a little more profitable.

With this in mind, the power gain provided by the PS5 Pro can help the generation extend the cycle time while maintaining very comfortable gaming conditions. In any case, Sony does not intend to accelerate the technological race, while everything is moving very quickly in other sectors (example: Apple releases a new chip and a new iPhone every year). What Hideaki Nishino rightly recalls: “ Technological advancements and innovation are happening faster today. Phones are updated every year. PCs are updated every year. I don't think we'll go for updates every year, but there are things we can look at to bring the best things to the console segment. This is our vision. »
