Leclerc summoned to Brazil GP stewards for swearing

Ferrari Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc has been summoned to the Brazilian Grand Prix stewards for bad language after his podium in Mexico.

Leclerc swore in the post-race press conference in Mexico, when recounting his near-miss with the wall on the exit at the final corner, a mistake that cost him second place to Lando Norris.

At the end of that answer, Leclerc said: “I had one oversteer and then when I recovered from that oversteer, I had an oversteer from the other side and then I was like, ‘f***’.”

That came after Max Verstappen was controversially handed motorsport’s version of community service by the Singapore GP stewards for swearing in the pre-event press conference. That penalty led to a subsequent protest from Verstappen.

On Thursday in Brazil, Verstappen also made reference to Leclerc’s swearing going unpunished, saying the FIA’s clampdown on drivers swearing “only counts for me”.

Later on Thursday, The Race revealed the FIA hadn’t let Leclerc’s swearing go and now on Friday there’s confirmation that Leclerc has been summoned to the stewards for an “alleged breach of Article 12.2.1.k of the International Sporting Code – Language during the Mexico FIA post-race press conference”.

He’ll see the stewards at 5.45pm local time, around an hour and a half after sprint qualifying is scheduled to end.

Leclerc did acknowledge his wrongdoing immediately after swearing. “Oh, sorry!” Leclerc said, before adding: “Oh, no, oh no! I don’t want to join Max!”

Pierre Gasly has also been summoned to see the Brazil stewards for allegedly failing to attend the drivers’ meeting on time.
