Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has expressed grave concerns regarding the capabilities of two people he refers to as “supposed Football experts” at Manchester United, specifically targeting Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox. Souness’ skepticism comes after a disastrous start to the Premier League campaign for the Red Devils, who achieved just three wins in their opening nine matches before the eventual sacking of manager Erik ten Hag.
Despite high expectations for a transformative era led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, who have promised to overhaul the club’s long-standing problems since the era of Sir Alex Ferguson, the early signs have been anything but promising. The summer transfer window saw substantial investment – around £200 million – however, the signings were met with criticism regarding their quality.
Souness, expressing his frustration on the podcast Up Frontcommented: “In my opinion, the club have hit rock bottom in the Premier League, boasting their worst quality squad in history. Since the entry of INEOS, it is shockingly obvious that they lack a proper understanding of football. They have installed their so-called football experts Ashworth and Wilcox, but I wonder how they weren’t involved in the summer acquisitions.”
He continued: “They welcomed players like Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee. If they believe these individuals can elevate Manchester United, they are seriously mistaken. After a summer under them, look at the situation they have left us in – the The blame falls squarely on Ashworth.”
While the responsibility now passes to Ruben Amorim, to rescue the cast’s potential in a role that promises to be challenging, more comments have emerged from the world of sports analysis. Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara has been full of criticism of Ratcliffe’s management, calling his actions a “disgrace” and dubbing him a “joke” since taking control.
O’Hara stated on talkSPORT: “Ratcliffe has been absolutely absurd. He came in boasting about his billionaire status, claiming he would revolutionize the club, but he simply reduced the squad by 200 people, insisted they bring their own meals and is now trying to save on a jet for your Ballon d’Or nominees. Stop us from the rhetoric; you can’t claim to be a billionaire and then be miserable like that!
