2. Silent Times: silence is golden

In this world that always keeps turning, silence is highly undervalued. Kunsthal Extra City knows that silence is sometimes more powerful than words and recently opened up Silent Times, an exhibition that needs no words. Of video installations and photographic works it examines what happens when words, voices and political representation are sidelined. And of course it is Silent Times Tellingly, curator Joachim Naudts: “It could be a matter of ‘negative silence’ that is like suppression mechanism functions to silence people, whose voices then literally disappear, but also to ‘positive silence’, to silent protest.” In this way, the silence leaves room for reflection on all that is never said. 3. Kijktip: Anora

No one saw it coming, but director Sean Baker (The Florida Project) won the Palme d’Or this year with Anora. An enchanting, absurd, energetic fairy tale that can be placed somewhere between Cinderella and Pretty Woman. The story revolves around a Brooklyn escort who falls for the clumsy charms of a Russian millionaire’s son. But their romance inadvertently puts her in the crosshairs of his family, and things spiral out of control. (AI)

Now in cinemas.

4. Top pop: an ode to Tom Wesselmann and pop art

Great American Nudes, Tom Wesselmann

Just opened in Louis Vuitton Foundation: the exhibition ‘Pop Forever, Tom Wesselmann & …’, an exhibition dedicated to Tom Wesselmann (1931-2004) and his influence on pop art. The exhibition brings together 150 paintings and installations by the painter and sculptor and compares them with work by other pop art artists from different generations – from Roy Lichtenstein in Andy Warhol to Derrick Adams in Mickalene Thomas. This is how Wesselmanns become iconic Great American Nudes – naked female bodies on a background of everyday objects such as a television set – contrasted with alienating domestic scenes from contemporary pop art, such as the work Self-Obliteration van Yayoi Kusama. With this exhibition, the Fondation wants to emphasize the importance and current relevance of pop art today; the art movement that focuses on the absurd, rhymes art with popular culture and questions reality like no other.
