In the midst of the cesspool of Netflix series, this one stands as a beacon of hope. Scenario of exemplary precision, well-defined characters, twisted dramaturgy, clear-sighted political discourse… Whatever the door through which the viewer enters this painting of the mysteries of American diplomacy in Europe, he emerges enhanced. The first season had already established the terms of this subtle equation: telling the story behind the scenes of world news through the battle waged by a couple placed at its center. Kate Wyler, a woman in the field unfamiliar with the subtleties of the diplomatic game, is appointed ambassador of the United States to London where she arrives like a dog in a game of bowling, accompanied by her husband, an outstanding negotiator as devious as he is ambitious. Her appointment acts as a crash test: would Wyler make a good future vice-president of the United States?
Two excellent actors embody this two-headed hydra: Keri Russell, masterful in six seasons of “The Americans”, and Rufus Sewell, expert in the incarnation of bastards of all kinds.
