An investigation was launched in France following a complaint filed by the Human Rights League (LDH) against the comments of former MP Meyer Habib. The Paris prosecutor's office confirmed this information, stressing that these comments had been considered offensive.
It all started when Meyer Habib, affiliated with the Les Républicains party, made a controversial statement during his appearance on Radio J on October 20, 2023. He compared the population of Gaza to “a cancer” when addressing the question of reception Palestinians fleeing Israeli bombings.
The LDH strongly criticized Habib, accusing him of adopting an “alarmist” and “hostile” discourse, inciting hatred against this community. As a result, a complaint was filed on February 2, 2024 for “aggravated public insult” and “incitement to hatred” based on ethnic or national origin.
The Paris public prosecutor's office entrusted the investigation to the Brigade for the Repression of Personal Delinquency (BRDP), upon receipt of the complaint on July 16. Meyer Habib, a proven supporter of Israel, represented the eighth constituency of French people abroad until his defeat last July in early elections.
This is not the first controversy surrounding Habib. In December 2023, 39 environmentalist, socialist and La France insoumise deputies requested the lifting of his parliamentary immunity. They accused him of shocking remarks made in the National Assembly after the death of a Quai d'Orsay employee in Rafah.
