Increase in the minimum wage, winter break, gas prices… Here's everything that changes on November 1st

Revaluation of the minimum wage

The decree relating to “par anticipation” on the revaluation of the minimum wage by 2% from November 1 and announced by the Prime Minister during his general policy speech, was published Thursday morning in the Official Journal.

From November 1, 2024, the decree covers in mainland , Guadeloupe, Guyana, , , Saint-Barthélemy, Saint-Martin and Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, the amount of the gross SMIC hourly at 11.88 euros (increase of 2%), i.e. 1,801.80 euros monthly on the basis of the legal working hours of 35 hours per week“, details the decree.

The minimum wage is the only salary indexed to inflation. It benefits each year from a mechanical increase on January 1st and revaluations also occur during the year as soon as inflation exceeds 2%.

The government can choose to go beyond the automatic increase by “a helping hand“, but there hasn't been one since 2012.

Winter tires required

Until March 31, 2025, winter tires will be compulsory in 34 mountainous departments in France, or have chains or socks for their tires. These include Ain, Hautes-Alpes, Ardèche, , Drôme, Isère, Jura, , , Bas-Rhin, Haut-Rhin, Rhône , the Vosges, the Territoire de .

Only “3PMSF” tires will be considered compliant winter tires.

The law, which came into force in 2021, the controls were only preventive and will be again this season.

Winter break begins

The winter break will begin from November 1 and end on March 31, 2025. During this period, tenants cannot be excluded from their accommodation, and gas or electricity cuts will be prohibited.

Please note, this truce does not apply to squatters, in cases of divorce, violence within a home or in the event of rehousing.

The price of gas drops (a little)

After the increases last July and October, gas prices will fall by 1% in November, as announced the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE).

For example, for a gas heating contract, the price of the average kWh goes from 0.111 euros in October to 0.109 euros in November.

Tobacco free month

The ninth edition of tobacco-free month will begin on November 1st. This operation encourages smokers to stop smoking for a month, which can increase their chances of completely stopping tobacco consumption by five.

A help kit and a consultation with a professional are offered to everyone who registers on the site of the month without tobacco before November 1st.
