: the army asked to help with the evacuation of 580 vacationers stranded after bad weather: News

The French army indicated on Monday that it had been asked to help evacuate some of the approximately 580 vacationers stranded in a private vacation center in following bad weather over the weekend.

“Following the recent bad weather in the south of and particularly in the Var department, requests for assistance from the armies issued by the Var prefecture are being studied,” the general staff told AFP defense zone in the south of France.

“The armies stand ready to come to the aid of the population, in support of the civil security units and the Var firefighters,” she added, specifying that the 21st RIMa (Marine Infantry Regiment) was on site to assess the feasibility of transporting people.

Earlier on Monday, the mayor of Le Muy, where the Canebières holiday resort is located, told AFP that “the authorities are working so that holidaymakers who had to leave the premises today or during the week can leave”.

“There is water, electricity, no one is panicked” in this holiday center, Liliane Boyer said.

A list of people to be taken care of must be drawn up, with priority cases.

“People who need to leave without a car must register at reception,” the domain’s website said on Monday, stressing that this departure would take place no earlier than Tuesday.

Those who want to leave will probably have, if the terrain permits, to be transported in all-terrain vehicles via forest tracks, then will be able to return to their homes by train or plane, the mayor said. But they will have to leave their car there.

The private bridge which constitutes the only access to the Canebières estate, made up of houses and mobile homes, was damaged by the heavy rains and floods over the weekend in the South-East, isolating 584 people.

Quickly mobilized, state services carried out “three medical evacuations by helicopter to hospitals in the area” on Sunday evening, the Var prefecture said.

A press point bringing together the mayor of Le Muy, the area manager, the sub-prefect of and the director of the departmental fire and rescue service was announced at 3:00 p.m. near the damaged bridge.
