Top 14 – Sergio Parisse (): “A dark, complicated evening”

Sideline coach Sergio Parisse returned to the rout of the RCT on the Stadium lawn (57-5) for the eighth day of Top 14. A poor performance to forget for the Varois overwhelmed in the second period.

How do you come out of such a setback on the Stadium pitch?

To say that it’s very, very hard tonight is obvious. We come out with a match where we have very little to remember. And at the same time, we have no time to lose because in five days, we play an important match against at home. It’s up to us to quickly switch to the next deadline.

Your first period, however, foreshadowed another fate this evening.

Yes, we were on target but I think that, especially in the second half, Toulouse scored too quickly. We lacked fluidity in our game, in the transmissions. Toulouse, this evening, was far superior to us in the quality of play and passing. The score is heavy yes, it hurts, but over the 80 minutes, the difference was impressive. You have to know how to accept it.

However, I don't think we're off to a bad start to the match. Players make choices and assume them. It's good, there are intentions, there is the desire to fight. We will try, as I said earlier, to remember the positive things. But when we take 57 points, we have to quickly move on to the next match.

Your players made strong choices as you said. Going into touch in the first half rather than taking the points for example, what do you think?

I was captain my entire career and I learned one thing as a player: when you make choices, you have to take responsibility for them. Almost all coaches regularly ask for three points. But afterwards, the players are the ones on the pitch, who make the decisions and who are responsible for these choices. From there, I think the players were fully behind David (Ribbans) who made the choices. We could, yes, perhaps take three points. Unfortunately, we lose this touch five meters away and we take an 80 meter counterattack then we spend ten minutes in our camp. In any case, this evening, it was not decided by two or three points.

Is there not an imbalance in the efforts that your pack produces and the camp outings, the kicking game, to relieve it a little?

Today, on the outings of camp, more generally on the kicking game, we were not good. The times we put pressure on it, it was difficult to take the balls and the times we went long, the Toulouse players, Ramos in particular, sent us back to our camp. We lost a few kicking exchange battles.

To come back to the conquest, is that satisfying?

Yes, combat is the basis of this sport. I think that on the other hand, we had a fairly effective pack. In terms of conquest, I think we lived up to the challenge. We tried on the offensive and defensive sidelines to put them in a little difficulty. We had a lot of balls to start our game.

Despite everything, the score is very heavy this evening…

50 points (57-5 in total), it hurts everyone a lot. It's a dark, complicated evening. Today, we took a lesson and when you take the lesson, you shut up, you take it and you try to understand the reasons to move forward. It's up to us not to repeat the same mistakes in the future.
