United States GP live updates: Latest from today’s Grand Prix with Lando Norris on pole

With just six grands prix left this season — as well as two more sprints — it’s understandable if you’re starting to wonder when things could be decided and how that would happen.

Max Verstappen now leads Lando Norris in the drivers’ standings by 54 points heading into today’s grand prix. That is more than two race wins (25 points) plus a fastest lap bonus point at each (1 point), should Verstappen fail to finish in the top 10.

Six GP wins, two sprint race wins and six fastest laps mean there are still 172 points available to any one driver — which underlines how far away we are from a deciding moment.

With Norris’ deficit ahead of the weekend in Austin (52 points), he needed to outscore Verstappen by about nine points per race weekend to catch him come the checkered flag in Abu Dhabi.

For context, the difference is 10 points between finishing first and third in a grand prix.

Despite Norris’ great recent form, he was still short of that points-accumulation rate compared to Verstappen — even over the relatively shorter sample size.

And of course, he has a two-point loss to Verstappen in Austin after Saturday’s sprint.
