Istvan Kovacs will direct Real Madrid-Borussia and Horatiu Fesnic Girona-Slovan

Sports editorial, Oct 20 (EFE).- The Romanian referees Istvan Kovacs and Horatiu Fesnic will be in charge of directing the matches of the third day of the group stage of the Champions League between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund on October 22 and Girona against Slovan de Bratislava, respectively.

Istvan Kovacs will have his compatriots Mihai Marica and George Florin Neacsu as assistants at the Santiago Bernabéu. The VAR will be directed by the Dutch Pol Van Boekel.

This will be the second time that Kovacs referees Real Madrid. The first was on April 26, 2022, in the Champions League semifinals, in the first leg against Manchester City played at the Etihad stadium. The result was favorable to the English team 4-3.

Last season Istvan Kovacs directed some relevant matches such as Barcelona-PSG on the return leg of the quarterfinals, which ended with a 1-4 victory for the French team, or the Europa League final between Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen.

He has led Borussia Dortmund twice and on both occasions the German team won away from home. The first on December 8, 2020, in the group stage of the 2020/2021 season, when they beat Zenit (0-1), and the second, also in the group stage but from the 2023/2024 campaign, when they beat Milan (1-3).

For the match between Girona and Slovan Bratislava, another Romanian, Horatiu Fesnic, will be in charge of directing the contest. He will be assisted by his compatriots Valentin Avram and Alexandru Cerei and in the VAR by Catalin Popa.

For Fesnic, 35, this will be his first Champions League match as main referee. EFE
