In , a project supported by EELV aims to transform a basilica into a shooting room

Could Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde become the good mother of crack? The idea may seem absurd, but it is nevertheless very serious. The project supported by Europe Ecologie les Verts proposes to convert part of the basilica into a shooting room.

The project, which is causing controversy, aims to transform part of the Notre-Dame de la Garde basilica in into a lower risk consumption room (SCMR). A plan that is not unanimous: the petition in favor of this initiative has so far only collected 110 signatures.

The idea of a shooting room, which refers to addiction treatment centers (HSA), was initially imagined on Boulevard de la Libération. The experiment was ultimately unsuccessful. This time, his supporters return with an online petition to open an HSA inside the Notre-Dame de la Garde basilica in Marseille.

Relaunch the debate

“Offering an HSA to the good mother above all allows us to relaunch the debate. We have something in common between the people who are for and the people who are against: the fact of being outraged by street injections and syringes which are found on the ground in Marseille, we are not lacking in location, but in will and political courage”, declared Nicolas Thomasset, at the origin of this petition entitled “let’s transform the Good Mother into an HSA”.

According to him, this solution provides a decisive response to a public health problem. However, the initiative divides: “It would be an outrage. Instead of having prayer, we have the shot”, exclaimed Nassima at the microphone of Europe 1. Madjid, taxi driver, who brings people every day tourists to the good mother, is worried about the repercussions of such a project on the image of Marseille: “people already have a bad image of Marseille if you add a shooting room… and it will be bad for our lady of the guard.” Others say they are open to the proposal.
