It had been since 2006 that a Beerschot player could score twice against Anderlecht. Then Jurgen Cavens scored twice in a 2-0 win against the Purple and White rivals from Brussels. Eighteen years later, Cavens has a successor: Marwan Al-Sahafi.

The young Saudi mercenary from Al-Ittihad did not only write history for Beerschot. The 20-year-old attacker also yesterday became the first ever Saudi player to score twice in a European competition match. In fact, it had been since 2012 that a Saudi had even scored in one of the ten largest European competitions.

The last person to succeed was called Saleh Al-Shehri, who scored for the Portuguese first division club SC Beira-Mar twelve years ago at the age of 19. The name Al-Shehri may ring a bell among football nerds. Two years ago, he scored the equalizing goal in Saudi Arabia’s stunt victory against future world champion Argentina at the World Cup in Qatar.

Viral in Saudi Arabia

The performances of Al-Sahafi and his teammate Faisal Al-Ghamdi are closely followed in Saudi Arabia. Photos and videos of the two Saudi players immediately go viral on Beerschot’s social media. Beerschot’s tweet after the final whistle in which the two Saudis hug each other has already received more than 5,000 likes and has already reached almost 1 million users on X.

The video of Al-Sahafi singing alongside captain Ryan Sanusi also received more than 5,000 likes and many hundreds of thousands of impressions in no time. Figures they never saw before on Beerschot’s social media. The video footage of his goals was also eagerly shared in Saudi Arabia via rights holder DAZN. And so this Beerschot gets some international allure. With many thanks to Marwan Al-Sahafi.
