Manchester City finally return to action on Sunday afternoon following an international break that has been a maelstrom of off-the-pitch change and speculation over the future of key figures at the club.
Txiki Begiristain’s forthcoming retirement was announced, with Hugo Viana quickly confirmed as his successor, while Pep Guardiola’s future has been a key talking point over the past fortnight.
City fans, therefore, will be delighted to see their team return to action as their side sets about dislodging Liverpool from the top of the Premier League table.
Guardiola’s side were made to work hard for their 3-2 win over Fulham before the break but now have the perfect opportunity to find their groove again when they visit basement dwellers Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday afternoon.
Alan Shearer’s bullish Man City prediction
Gary O’Neil’s men have struggled this season, claiming just a single point from their seven Premier League games so far, and former England and Newcastle United skipper Alan Shearer simply will not entertain thoughts of an upset.
“Wolves are under huge pressure after a poor start to the season,” Shearer told Metro. “This is not the fixture you want to see when you are desperate for your first win of the season.
I can’t see them taking anything from the game – City will get the three points.
“You have to look at the bigger picture for Gary O’Neil. If teams are showing promise and being unlucky, then that’s one thing, but if you look at a team and they’ve got no pattern, no understanding or confidence, then you must judge that.
“However, with what he did at Wolves last season, I hope he has got a little bit of time on his side and gets the chance to pull Wolves out of trouble.”
Wolves’ frailties mean Haaland can extend brilliant record
Wolves’ record so far this season has been dreadful, with a draw at Nottingham Forest seven weeks ago the only point the have gained so far this term. While the fixture list has not been particularly kind to them, they have shipped in 21 goals in the league so far this season, six more than any other team.
The last player they will therefore want to come up against is Erling Haaland, who has a typically excellent record against the West Midlanders.

The Norwegian has started all four of City’s games against Wolves in their previous two seasons and has plundered eight goals – one every 40 minutes.
With his Norway side having been humbled 5-1 by Austria at the weekend, there’s a good chance the forward will have a fire in his belly for this outing.
