He was expected by Weather and he was indeed there. This Thursday, October 17, a stormy episode of rare intensity fell around Perpignan and over a major part of the Pyrénées-Orientales. Of heavy rain, of the hail and of very many flashes hit the driest department in France, where the Minister of Agriculture was visiting today.

News Perpignan announced it to you a few hours ago. The Pyrénées-Orientales recorded an intense stormy episode early in the afternoon. In the space of two hours, the morning sun gave way to a very active depression, from Spain.

And it is a real flood which fell from Conflent to the coast, passing through Albères, Vallespir or even the Roussillon plain, as evidenced by these few images in the Perpignan station area:

4,000 flashes in two hours

This stormy episode was marked by high electrical intensity. Many, many lightning flashes broke out in the dark sky of the Pyrénées-Orientales this Thursday afternoon.

According to data collected by Weather Skyaround 4,000 lightning strikes hit the department, between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., or 33 flashes per minute, on average:

Between 25 and 50 millimeters of rain

According to initial data, this brief but very intense storm still wet the eastern part of the Pyrénées-Orientales as it should. Approximately 25mm of precipitation fell across the entire area affected by this episode, with peaks of 50mm locally, such as on the foothills of Albères in particular.

Joined by News Perpignanthe Pyrénées-Orientales gendarmerie indicates that some trees fell on the RD 617, between Canet-en-Roussillon and Perpignan, and on the RD 12, after Sainte-Marie-la-Mer. No injuries is not to be deplored.

Return of the tramontana

According to the latest forecasts, the large cell has headed towards Aude and northern Languedoc. But while the sun returned to Perpignan, in the middle of the afternoon, other more localized storms are expected until this evening in the department.

The tramontana should make its return at the very end of the day. As a result, the thermometer will fall tomorrow. It will only be 17°C at the best of the day, this Friday, October 18.
