The Israeli army confirmed on Thursday that Yahya Sinwar, head of the political bureau of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), was killed during clashes in the southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday.

The Israeli army said in a statement that its soldiers carried out operations during the past few days in the southern Gaza Strip based on intelligence information indicating that leaders of the Hamas movement were present in the region.

He added that a force from the 828th Brigade present in the area clashed with three fighters yesterday and killed them, and after examination it turned out that Sinwar was one of them, according to the army statement.

Israeli Army Radio stated that the clash with Al-Sinwar took place at Tal Al-Sultan in Rafah, and he was wearing a military jacket and was accompanied by another field commander.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant said – during a speech on the Gaza Strip border – that “Israel today ended a long-term reckoning with Sinwar,” adding that his killing is a message to the families of the dead and Israeli detainees that “the army is doing everything for them,” as he put it.

Israeli Army Chief of Staff Herzi Halevy said that after a year, Israel “closed the account with Sinwar,” who bears responsibility for the attack on October 7, 2023, as he put it.

For his part, Israeli President Isaac Herzog said that we must now work with greater force and by all means to recover the detainees after the killing of Sinwar.

The Axios website quoted Israeli officials as saying that the incident that resulted in Sinwar’s death was a coincidence, and not based on intelligence.

There has been no comment yet from Hamas regarding the Israeli army’s statement.

Israel considers Sinwar the mastermind of the Al-Aqsa Flood operation on October 7, 2023, which led to the killing of more than a thousand Israeli soldiers and settlers.
