Cyclist killed in : police custody of the motorist in question extended by 24 hours

Two atmospheres this Wednesday evening. While nearly a thousand people gathered on the square in front of the Madeleine church (8th arrondissement), to pay tribute to Paul Varry, the 27-year-old cyclist run over by a motorist on Boulevard Malesherbes on October 15, the main implicated was heard by the investigators.

His police custody was extended by 24 hours, the prosecutor’s office told Le Parisien.

According to this same information, only one hearing took place on Wednesday between the 52-year-old driver questioned for “murder” and the investigators. He would have pleaded the fatal accident, reports his lawyer to BFMTV. “He is devastated and screams his innocence,” comments the latter.

The events took place shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday evening. Paul is going down the boulevard on his two-wheeler when he crosses the path of Ariel M.’s SUV, causing him to fall. The young man then hit the vehicle before its driver carried out a maneuver, apparently hitting it deliberately. Despite the intervention of passers-by, trying to resuscitate the cyclist, then that of the emergency services, Paul Varry did not survive.

“My client immediately got out of the car to help the cyclist when he realized what had just happened, and tried to resuscitate him. He would never have intentionally driven over someone,” insists Ariel M.’s lawyer to BFMTV journalists. The suspect will be questioned again this Thursday by investigators from the 1st judicial police district.

For several years, this young 27-year-old Parisian had made the place of cycling in the city a real fight. He was an active member of the Paris-en-Selle association and had notably contributed significantly to developing soft mobility arrangements within Saint-Ouen, in Seine-Saint-Denis.
