the finance committee will resume examination of the finance bill

“A certain number of questions arise about the sincerity of what was presented to us in the fall of 2023 and what was told to us in the spring,” by the Macronist government, on the management of public accounts and the widening deficit, declared the President of the Senate Gérard Larcher, on CNews-Europe 1, Thursday morning. As a reminder, the deficit is forecast at 6.1% of GDP this year, not the 5.1% forecast by the former government in April.

“I’m afraid we haven’t been told everything,” added Gérard Larcher, before estimating that “the Minister of Economy and Finance [Bruno Le Maire] but also the President of the Republic » ignored warnings about the drift in the deficit and public spending.

Gérard Larcher, member of the Republicans (LR) then recalled his support for the government led by Michel Barnier, also from the ranks of the right-wing party, as well as for the draft budget that he presented, while critical voices are raising, including on the right, regarding the increase in certain taxes and taxes on the income of the wealthiest households. “ The priority is the reduction of public spending, it is not the increase in taxation, but we see clearly that the addition of the two, for the year 2025, is necessary”in view of the economic situation in , declared Mr. Larcher.

The President of the Senate also gave his support to the Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau on the subject of immigration, while the former president of the senators LR declared last week that he “don’t deviate[ait] no a priori solution”, about centers to transfer illegal migrants outside the European Union (EU). Gérard Larcher also estimated that a new immigration law is needed in 2025 – while the provisions of the last one, adopted last year, are not yet all applied – opposing the former prime minister on this subject. Gabriel Attal.
