“Patients, life stories”: the hospital seen by the sick

For a year, ten people facing a serious pathology were followed. They shared their daily life with illness, constant medical monitoring, heavy treatments or delicate operations. They share with sincerity and modesty their introspective journey in the face of their illness and their faith in life.

Illness like a cleaver

These patients all have one thing in common: they were in perfect health when the disease struck them. Isabelle discovered that she was going to have to have heart surgery, Laurence that she was going to have to have a tumor removed. At less than thirty years old, Alice and Lunes found themselves on dialysis. Paul has been fighting a blood disease for months. Still others are hospital regulars. Manu, for example, was having surgery for the fourteenth time.

The documentary also shows the daily lives of patients awaiting a transplant, an operation that can change their lives, or even save them. But for Alice, accepting a kidney from her dad is terribly complicated. Carl was one of the first HIV patients to receive a lung transplant. He often thinks of his donor whom he considers today to be an angel.

The actress Clémentine Célarié, who fought in 2019 against colon cancer which she talks about in her book Forbidden Wordsagreed to participate in this project. Now cured, she tells these life stories. For her, “These documentaries constitute a real journey towards healing”.

In the first episode of this four-episode documentary series (two are broadcast today, the last two on October 23), we will get to know these patients who discover their illnesses and who will have to be hospitalized.

The second episode, in fact, meets patients at the hospital. For Alice, it’s the big day, the day when her dad will give her a kidney. Manu is having surgery for the 14th time while Laurence, who is finishing her treatment for breast cancer, must now have surgery for a tumor in the pituitary gland…
