Nearly 30°C in the , 27°C in the Alpes-Maritimes… Why is it so hot this Tuesday when a Mediterranean episode is about to start?

It’s impossible to understand anything. The thermometer is supposed to rise to 29°C this Tuesday afternoon at Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer in the , i.e. 7°C above the seasonal normal. Météo- also forecasts 25°C in Hyères and (+3°C).

On the Alpes-Maritimes side, we should reach 27°C to Guillaumes, either 9°C above normal for the month of October, 27°C in Roquebillière (+7°C) and 24°C in (+2°C).

Sahara dust

These high temperatures are due to a “hot and heavy southerly flow desert dust“, which poured into Western Europe this Sunday, explains Météo-France.

This air mass is coupled to a “huge veil of Saharan dust yellowish tintswhich covers a large part of the sea.

Episodes of this type have increased this year, with peaks in intensity at the end of March and the beginning of summer.

“Before, there were on average two or three per year. In 2022, there were ten or eleven”deciphered in July Paul Marquis, independent meteorologist and founder of E-Meteo Service.

This increase “is linked to the more severe drought and the trajectories of the depressions which change: they pass closer to Africa, so there is necessarily dust from the Sahara more frequently.

Heavy rain from Wednesday

The weather will change drastically from Tuesday night to Wednesday, with the arrival of a Cévennes episode In France.

Also called the Mediterranean episode, this involves very heavy precipitation over a short period of time. The equivalent of several months of rain can fall in just a few hours, hence the need to warn in advance.

The departments of Var and Alpes-Maritimes are placed in yellow vigilance from Tuesday midnight, until Wednesday 10 a.m. for thunderstorms and noon for rain-flood.

“Locally significant precipitation is possible with 40 to 50mm locallygusts of up to 70km/h and moderate electrical activity, from the east of Bouches-du-Rhône to the Alpes-Maritimes via the Var”warns the Var prefecture in a press release.

“These significant intensities will affect towns on the coast before evacuating inland in the morning, losing intensity. On Wednesday, showers could persist in the interior of the Var and the Alpes-Maritimes. The coast

will also be affected by showers which should remain light to moderate.”
