Pan-Africanist activist Kémi Séba arrested in after losing his French nationality

The pan-Africanist activist, Kémi Séba, was arrested in this Monday, October 15, according to a source close to the case. At this stage, the precise reasons for his arrest have not yet been communicated.

Kémi Séba, whose real name is Stellio Gilles Robert Capo Chichi, had his French nationality withdrawn last July, as stipulated in a decree published in the Official Journal. Aged 42, this influential activist is known for his radical positions against the West and his links with Russia. Last March, he had already made a name for himself when a conference he was to give in Essonne was almost banned by the prefecture, due to the nationality forfeiture procedure underway against him. A decision temporarily suspended by the administrative court. On this occasion, Kémi Séba posted a video online in which he burned a document that he claimed to be his French passport.

An anti-colonialist activist and former leader of the dissolved Tribu Ka group, Séba was once distinguished by his anti- speech and his promotion of racial separation. Dissolved in 2006 by the French government, this small group had already earned it several convictions in France for inciting racial hatred. Today, he leads the Pan-Africanist Emergencies movement, a group that enjoys strong popularity on social media.

Kémi Séba has, in recent years, led several actions in Africa against the CFA franc, becoming a leading figure in demonstrations against this currency in several African countries. His militant activities have regularly led him to be arrested, expelled or returned from various nations, such as Ivory Coast, Senegal or Guinea. In France, his influence and actions have also been criticized. Last year, Renaissance deputy Thomas Gassilloud, then president of the defense committee in the National Assembly, publicly accused Kémi Séba of playing the role of relay for Russian propaganda, claiming that he served “a foreign power which fuels anti-French sentiment.
