What’s new at the Motor Show?

This 90th edition turns out to be less flashy than the previous ones, with more everyday vehicles, and fewer “ concept cars » and inaccessible models. But dozens of new electric products are supposed to revive the market while the sector is in full slowdown.

Only Renault is putting on a show with its resurrected R17 coupe in an electric version, its concept “ Emblem » supposed to be more respectful of the environment, and Alpine concept cars. But the diamond brand is playing big at home with its electric R4 and R5. An all-purpose car, with a range of 300 kilometers for 30,000 euros, the Renault 4 must complete the French manufacturer’s electric offering for the middle classes, with the smaller Renault 5 and the future Twingo.

Also playing on this democratization, Citroën is presenting the new version of its small C3. The Chinese brand Leapmotor, associated with Stellantis, offers a few steps away the cheapest electric car on the market, the small T03, assembly of which has just started in Poland. And other Chinese manufacturers of electric and hybrid cars are arriving in number: the generalist BYD, the luxury Hongqi, the technophile XPeng, Maxus (utility vehicles) and Skyworth (subsidiary of an electronics group) are presenting ever-increasing ranges in . supplied vehicles for the European market.

While the French government announced an increase in penalties on gasoline and diesel cars, which is enraging the sector, Emmanuel Macron took a long tour of the show this Monday afternoon, October 14. “ must continue to reindustrialize, must continue to innovate and must continue to create jobs », Launched the head of state.

The automobile industry, and in particular the electric vehicle sector, is a good example of this policy aimed at reindustrializing France, the president insisted: “ We are in the process of consolidating an electricity sector which produces and will produce even more here », added Emmanuel Macron. “ There is work that must be done between the government and Parliament », Underlined the Head of State, in response to a question on the balance to be found between taxation and reduction of deficits.

Leasing d’occasion

The boss of Stellantis Carlos Tavares, whose group took advantage of the “ leasing social » at the beginning of 2024, proposed this Monday, October 14 that this system be extended in 2025 to used electric cars, joined by the bosses of Renault and Volkswagen France. Carlos Tavares, Luca de Meo for Renault and Oliver Zipse for BMW will come and explain their vision of mobility during conferences this Tuesday, October 15. The CGT announces a demonstration in front of the salon on Thursday October 17.

The German Volkswagen group (Audi, Skoda), BMW-Mini and the Korean Kia are making a comeback after a few years of absence. The American Tesla also makes an unexpected appearance to show its huge Cybertruck SUV, and Cadillac (General Motors) marks its return to Europe with imposing electric models.

If most luxury car manufacturers are absent from this general public show, a few Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, Porsche and racing car models are to be presented, between the vehicle testing center, exhibitions on the automobile history and the karting track. Alpine, the premium brand that the Renault group wants to grow, presented the cutting style of its future sports models through its A390 concept.

While the Geneva show had its last edition this winter, the Paris Motor Show is trying to renew itself and has revised its prices downward to attract more exhibitors. “ It’s a crazy world. We have the impression of returning to the automobile festival », rejoiced Citroën director Thierry Koskas. If there is less chrome, “ perhaps it is that the industry had reached the end of a model with pharaonic stands, we are returning to something more reasonable, more concrete ”, according to him. For Citroën, “ this is a pivotal moment because we are able to present a completely renewed range to our customers », Underlined Thierry Koskas, who intends to sell cars at the show. The World Cup expects to attract 500,000 visitors, with tickets costing 18 to 22 euros per entry depending on the day.
