Alexander De Croo keeps his commune, but…

The De Croos remain the kings of Brakel, despite the blows: the Open Vld list drawn by outgoing Prime Minister Alexander De Croo fell by more than 10 percent in Sunday’s elections, but remains well ahead with a score of 43.2 %. Enough to occupy 13 seats (-2) out of 25, just an absolute majority on the council.

In opposition, the Vlaams Belang list gains, with 3 more seats than currently. She gets 4. The local list Broakel2.0 has 6, Groen one and Vooruit 1 (-2).

In this small town of 15,000 inhabitants, the Prime Minister received 2,300 preference votes, his father Herman 987.

VLD Open Debacle

But elsewhere in Flanders, the liberal party is losing ground. In Ostend, for example, the outgoing mayor Bart Tommelein lost against Vooruit and immediately announced his departure from political life.

“The big losers tonight are the liberals. They were really destroyed in the constituencies. The only big blue names left with a sash are Gwendolyn Rutten and Alexander De Croo. Only Mathias De Clercq can still save something, if the score remains the same in Ghent. A painful start for Eva De Bleeker,” comments political journalist Wouter Verschelden on
