The month of October is particularly dark for the world of education. On October 16, 2020, Samuel Paty, a history and geography professor in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, was tragically murdered by an Islamist terrorist. This act of violence was triggered by the latter’s decision to show caricatures of Mohammed during a course on freedom of expression, a sensitive subject which has raised numerous debates in . The brutality of this act shocked the nation. Following this, Samuel Paty became a symbol of the fight for the values ​​of the Republic, such as secularism and freedom of expression. The professor’s assassination caused shock waves in the country. Unfortunately, three years after the death of Samuel Paty, France was once again hit by a tragic attack, with the murder of Dominique Bernard, a literature teacher in , on October 13, 2023. Like Samuel Paty, he was the target of senseless violence, recalling the dangers that teachers face in the exercise of their profession. His death sparked a new wave of outrage and solidarity with teachers, as well as increased awareness of the threats to the freedom to teach and educate.

Sad birthdays that Patrick Bruel decided to honor this Sunday, October 13, 2024. On his Instagram account, the singer posted a photo of the two men accompanied by the following caption: “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world” he wrote. A tribute praised by Internet users: “A duty to remember so as never to forget. Two teachers killed in their workplace”, “I will never get over it… My job definitely lost its meaning the day Samuel Paty was cowardly murdered”, or even “Let’s be education, let’s dare to believe in a better future..”. Deaths which particularly affect Patrick Bruel. For good reason, his mother was herself a teacher. He also dedicated a song to her in his latest album Encore, released at the end of 2022, entitled l’Institut. He spoke on the subject to Anne-Elisabeth Lemoine in C to you November 25, 2022: “I wanted to focus on the teacher, the professor, the one who gives our child the first keys to entering society. And then the importance of the word, of the book. Words symbols of expression. (…) I wanted to pay tribute to these people who very often changed my life.” A cause that is very close to his heart.
