Under pressure from Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic loses to Jannik Sinner at the Masters 1000 in Shanghai: “Too strong, too fast…”

“It was a very difficult match, obviously, playing against Novak is one of the toughest challenges you can face”declared the world number one who has won four of his last five matches against the Serbian, all played in the last eleven months. “I’m very happy with the way I handled the situation. He served very well in the first set, I couldn’t find a way to break him. I played a very good tie-break which gave me confidence to start the second set well.” A small break at the start of the second set was enough to lead Sinner to victory and return to four everywhere in the direct confrontations with Djokovic: “It’s hard to give you a secret about Novak to beat him because he has no weaknesses. You have to try to use the little opportunities he gives you, but there aren’t many during the match. He’s a legend of our sport, he’s very difficult to play against, so I’m very happy.”

No 100th title

Returning to competition in China, Nole hoped to win his hundredth career title. A goal that he must postpone: “I think I played good tennis but Jannik was too strong today, too fast, well done to him.” Before leaving the court, the native of Belgrade will also have a little word for Roger Federer present in the stands: “I’m not used to seeing you there. This is probably the first time I’ve played in front of you. It was extra pressure.”
