Nations League: England’s huge setback, beaten by Greece in League B

Greece created a surprise on Thursday evening by dominating England 1-2 during the third day of the Nations League at Wembley. Already winners of their first two matches, the Greeks take sole lead of group B2 with nine points, two more than the Three Lions.

Vangelis Pavlidis scored the first goal of the match after returning from the locker room (49th). The Benfica striker first thought he would score the break goal but it was refused for offside (83rd). The English equalized on a long shot from Jude Bellingham (87th) but conceded a new goal from Pavlidis (89th), who took advantage of a confused situation in the opposing area.

Appointed interim coach after the departure of Gareth Southgate, Irishman Lee Carsley suffered his first defeat at the helm of the Three Lions after two victories in two matches against Finland and Ireland. The latter also beat Finland at the same time (1-2), taking its first points in the competition and third place in the group. In Norway, Erling Haaland became the top scorer in his team’s history with 34 goals in 36 games, surpassing Jorgen Juve’s 33 goals from 1928 to 1937.

The City player scored twice (7th, 23rd) during the Norwegian victory at home against Slovenia (3-0). Alexander Sorloth also scored (52nd). Norway, 7 points, remains at the head of group B3 ahead of Austria (4 points), who also won at home against Kazakhstan (4-0). Christoph Baumgartner (10th), Philipp Lienhart (53rd), Marcel Sabitzer (56th) and Matthias Seidl (79th) scored the Austrian goals. Slovenia is third ahead of Kazakhstan.
