Domenico Tedesco: “Doku’s position? Completely normal”

What is your analysis of the match?

“Italy started well. It was hard for us to concede so quickly. In possession, we followed the plan. But we were too high in losing the ball. We had to play lower, calmer and more compact because they like to be pressed. The distances between our players were too great to achieve this.

Is it worrying that your plan was poorly executed?

“Yes because we can do better. We only had one session to change our mentality. We usually press higher, man against man and we had to change that. Doing it against Italy with a national team , it’s not possible because we don’t have enough automation.”

A two-faced Belgium takes on Italy, reduced to ten men for more than half-time! (2-2)

How do you justify Doku’s position?

“We wanted to have more of the ball. Because we were in 4-3-3 in possession. I put him on the right because he can play on both sides. The whole world knows that he likes to get into the game when he is on the left. He is less easy to defend when he is on the right. We chose to put him lower than Trossard. We had to pay a price to play like that. It wouldn’t be fair.”

Would you do the same thing again?

“Yes. It’s not a big change to see a winger defending low. Some teams play with six in defense with wingers coming down. After 30 minutes we changed to a 4-2-3-1 in which we were more comfortable.”

In the second half you were in numerical superiority and yet didn’t have many chances…

“The red card helped us get back into the game but I know as an Italian that it is sometimes harder to play against 10 Italians. The central defense plays at a very high level. We controlled the game. When they are very low, we have to remain more patient. We were sometimes too fast and we forgot to take advantage of the space left on the other side. But I am happy with what this team showed. “It’s possible to bring something else against , even if we only train once.”
