NARRATIVE. From demonstrations to general curfew, how the high cost of living set ablaze

A new episode of tension took place in on the night of Wednesday October 9 to Thursday October 10, 2024, in the midst of the movement against the high cost of living. Schools have been closed, announced the Academy of Martinique and the situation seems to be at an impasse. According to a prefectural source at l’AFPthe prefect of Martinique will establish an overnight curfew on Thursday and ban demonstrations and gatherings across the entire island. All this, while a new round table is planned for this Thursday.

A first citizen demonstration on 1is september

The high cost of living is a recurring subject of anger in Martinique and the West Indies. In 2009, a major movement had already taken place on this subject. But despite some progress at the time, expensive prices remain a reality experienced by all residents. As indicated by INSEE in 2023, food products, one of the main consumption items for Martinicans, remain 40% more expensive there than in mainland .

In July, the Rally for the Protection of Afro-Caribbean Peoples and Resources (RPPRAC), a new collective fighting against the high cost of living, therefore launched an ultimatum.
