: the SNES-FSU denounces “instrumentalization” after the attack at the Sévigné high school

Jean-François Caremel, academic secretary of SNES-FSU, answers questions from Bleu after the attack earlier this week on a teacher at the Sévigné high school in .

It’s an altercation that has provoked a lot of reactions since the start of the week. Monday afternoon, at the Sévigné high school in Tourcoing, a teacher was hit by a student after asking her to remove her veil. After denouncing this attack, the Minister of National Education is expected this Thursday morning at the high school to meet the teams.

“It’s a good thing that she comes to support the colleague who is attacked, that she comes to listen to the situation on site and that she truly shows the government’s support for the Republic school”reacts on France Bleu Nord this Thursday Jean-François Caremel, academic secretary of SNES-FSU, which also denounces the “instrumentalisations” which can be made of this matter where it is a question of respect for secularism.

“In this establishment, it is not a central problem, believes Jean-François Caremel. There is a problem, like in other high schools, where we must remember the rule. For example, the rule changed last year with the ban on the abaya. Since last year, we have had to explain to certain high school students that there are outfits that are not accepted. But it is not a high school that presents particular problems. What our colleagues say on site is that there is a context in the establishment that is more tense. What happened falls within the framework of other incidents which existed, but which were not linked to the lack of respect for secularism. There have been other incidents previously that were not focused on this issue.”
