Alpine skiing: suffering from cancer, Swiss downhiller Niels Hintermann skips the season

The great white circus will, alas, leave without Niels Hintermann this season. The 29-year-old from Zurich, winner of the Kvitfjell (Norway) downhill in mid-February, and 6th in the discipline last season, announced this Wednesday during a press conference that he was suffering from cancer of the lymph nodes and, already, a cross on the season to come.

A tumor was detected during a session with his physiotherapist on Tuesday, just after his return from South America, where he was on training with his teammates, Odermatt and Rogentin in particular. Luckily, the disease is only in the first stage.

Without delay, Hintermann will undergo two cycles of chemotherapy, as well as two weeks of radiation. “All this will last three months,” said Hintermann, who got married at the beginning of the summer, on Wednesday. So the season is already over. The chances of recovery are very good. Everything is under control, even though it is a rare disease.” Doctors are optimistic about Hintermann’s chances of returning to competition.

In the past, Hintermann had already missed an entire season, the 2017-2018 fiscal year, due to a shoulder injury.

Last winter, the downhiller, a three-time World Cup winner, only finished in the top 10 four times, the success in Kvitfjell saving his season.
