Victorious three times on the World Cup front, the 29-year-old from Zurich suffers from cancer of the lymph nodes, he announced during a press conference. The illness was discovered last Tuesday during a session with his physiotherapist. Fortunately, it is only at an early stage.

Hintermann will soon undergo two rounds of chemotherapy, as well as two weeks of radiation. “All this will last three months. So the season is already over,” said the skier.

Optimism despite the shock

“Unfortunately, we see once again how unpredictable and difficult life is to plan. The diagnosis was and remains a shock,” explained Hintermann, “infinitely grateful” to be able to count on his loved ones and his Federation. “We are all pulling together and this will give me the strength to get through this difficult time.”

“The chances of recovery are very good. Everything is under control, even if it is a rare disease,” he said. Doctors are also optimistic about the continuation of his sporting career.

This is the second time in his career that Hintermann has had to miss an entire season. He did not compete in a single race in 2017/18 due to a shoulder injury.

Last winter, the Zurich native only finished in the top 10 four times. But he saved his season by winning the Kvitfjell downhill.
