Gad Elmaleh takes over the Chez Michou cabaret: how his new neighbors welcomed the news

Four years after Michou’s death, his famous cabaret, 68 years after its opening, will experience a new life thanks to Gad Elmaleh. Justice has appointed him to buy the business of the emblematic place of Montmartre which will change its name, according to AFP which consulted the judgment. The comedian “will make it a place of comedy and humor, while keeping the soul of the place”according to its communications department. Around 80, rue des Martyrs, tongues are loosened. It is relief that dominates. The Michou page is definitely turning around and it’s sad but the takeover by Gad Elmaleh is excellent news because this place retains its artistic dimension and there was not yet a Comedy Club in Montmartre”explains this Wednesday, October 9 in the columns of Parisian Brice Moyse, president of the Lepic-Abbesses merchants association. The latter intends to propose to his new neighbor to be “the godfather of [leur] Christmas market”.

For Zélia, wedding dress designer from rue d’Orsel, friend of Michou, “there is no coincidence”. “Gad Elmaleh played Chouchou, a transvestite, and now he is buying Chez Michou”she says, like a scenario already written in advance. “I am relieved to know that this place that I have frequented for 40 years will continue to host shows and that it will not become a coffee shop”she added. However, the purchase of the former Michou cabaret by Gad Elmaleh is not unanimous. “This place which is part of the soul of Montmartre will become yet another Comedy Club. There are more than ten in while the Chez Michou cabaret was unique in its kind”analyzes a man living in the neighborhood. On the contrary, the PS mayor of the 18th century, Éric Lejoindre, believes that the purchase of the cabaret by Gad Elmaleh is “a nice surprise and good news”.

Michou’s niece and her former collaborators, delighted to see Gad Elmaleh take over his famous cabaret

“Gad Elmaleh is a serious person who I would be happy to meet when the time comes. What is good is that Chez Michou remains a place of spectacle and humor as he projects”throws into the columns of Parisian the councilor of the 18th arrondissement of Paris. “We would have been unfortunate if the place became something other than a cabaret. It will no longer be called Chez Michou, but Gad is going to make it a very beautiful place. It’s a very good thing to turn the page, by taking a turn”reacted for her part Michou’s niece, Catherine Catty-Jacquart.

The youngest transformist of the man in blue troupe, Antoine Chaudeur, aged 23, was nicknamed “pet”in reference to the character played on stage and in the cinema by the new owner of the place. A strange coincidence. “Gad Elmaleh hasn’t contacted us but you never know, maybe he will invite us to perform one day in his new comedy club”says the artist. The new owner of the place just has to grab the pole to satisfy the fans of Michou’s old troupe.
