Shanghai: Alcaraz dismisses Monfils

The day of revenge continues in Shanghai. After that of Jannik Sinner against Ben Shelton, beaten last year by the American at the same stage of the competition, Carlos Alcaraz won against Gaël Monfils. The Spaniard won in two sets (6-4, 7-5) against the Habs who had beaten him when he entered the fray in Cincinnati a few months ago, “the worst match of his career” according to the main interested party at the time.

Alcaraz becomes, thanks to this victory, the first Spaniard to reach the quarter-finals in Shanghai since 2017 (Nadal, Ramos-Vinolas). In a very close encounter, the recent winner of the Beijing tournament made the difference at the end of each set to come out on top against the Habs. He won his 12th match in a row on the circuit.

Alcaraz was imperial as soon as he took to the net with seven points won out of eight (88%) in this area.

“I tried to stay calm, control my emotions and wait for my chances. I had a few chances to break him at the start of the second set, but I couldn’t take them. In those moments I tried to stay calm and tell myself that I was going to get more. This helped me a lot to show my best tennis during the match. I feel the ball really well, much more than during the American tour. So I am happy to be able to do it and to continue to move forward,” rejoiced the main person concerned after the meeting.

In the quarter-finals, Juan Carlos Ferrero’s protégé will face Tommy Paul, 13th in the world, or Tomas Machac, 33rd.
