Mercato: Real Madrid’s plan for Trent Alexander-Arnold

Real Madrid did not wait for Dani Carvajal’s injury to track Trent Alexander-Arnold. According to Marca, the confidence placed in the duo formed by the second captain and Lucas Vázquez was and still is absolute, but the idea of supporting and competing with these two veterans has gained ground. For its part, Carvajal’s injury accelerated this reasoning. In view of the exceptionally long time of absence which is expected for his convalescence, it is now a necessity to find medium-term reinforcement to support Vázquez after this summer.

As usual, the sports management draws up an overview of the players whose contracts are ending and tracks down the most interesting profiles. With June 30, 2025 as the horizon, two players particularly caught their attention, one on each side of the defense: Alphonso Davies and Trent Alexander-Arnold. For the moment, both players are refusing contract extension offers from their club.

Aged 23 and 26 respectively, being players referenced in their position, with fairly offensive profiles for full-backs and being a mix of youth and experience, they tick all the boxes Real Madrid are looking for. The goal is to achieve these two moves for the 2025-26 season and January 1, 2025 is a date circled in red for the White House, since it will legally be able to offer them a pre-contract.

The situation has recently evolved at the right-back position for Real Madrid and this could be a game-changer. If getting Trent Alexander-Arnold freely on July 1, 2025 is still on the table, a new avenue is currently opening up and it would consist of accelerating the plan by six months. If he does not renew by January 1, the Englishman will be able to sign a pre-contract with Real Madrid and, once everything is in order, the two clubs could negotiate for the Merengues to buy out his last six months of contract in order to be able to take advantage of the player from mid-season.

The Spanish daily Mark underlines that this option will in any case be evaluated in the coming weeks. The first thing to look at is Lucas Vázquez. He will have to play matches without a natural replacement and live up to expectations. What could also play a determining role is the infirmary at mid-season. The Madrilenians have had their heads underwater since the start of the 2024-25 financial year and the good initial depth is poorly resisting the friction of the season. Finding reinforcement could become an obligation, and even if it means investing, you might as well do it on the priority target around which the club wishes to build.

The whole problem would be to convince Liverpool to let go of Trent Alexander-Arnold during the season. It would depend on the situation of their season and their demands regarding the transfer amount. Obviously, the operation would be higher than a simple free signing, which should give sports management pause, but it remains a possible option.
