Netherlands: Star Johan Neeskens has died!

The Dutch national team is mourning the departure of one of its stars. Johan Neeskens, pillar of the great Netherlands team of the 1970s, died this Monday, October 7. He was 73 years old.

Johan Neeskens, who died at the age of 73, was one of the architects of Dutch “total football” and one of the pillars of the great Dutch team of the 1970s alongside Johan Cruyff, of whom he been the most faithful lieutenant, also at club level, at Ajax and Barça. This midfielder had two tireless legs and amazed with his ability to move up the field at full speed to play both in defense and attack.

Neeskens was part of the Ajax team that won three consecutive European Cups in the early 1970s and was also a member of the Dutch team that reached the World Cup finals in 1974 and 1978. He had 49 selections. “With his signature tackles, his sublime vision of the game and his iconic penalties, he will forever remain one of the best players Dutch football has ever produced,” the KNVB said.

When his death was announced, tributes poured in in his memory. “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Johan Neeskens. Our thoughts are with his family. Rest in peace, Ajax legend, Ajax said on X.

Still on the same social network, FC Barcelona wrote: “A Blaugrana legend who will remain forever engraved in our memories. Rest in peace.”

The KNVB announced that it would observe a minute of silence during the next two international matches against Hungary and Germany. After his playing career, Neeskens turned to coaching, particularly in developing countries.

Johan Neeskens is the stepfather of striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel, married to Bianca Neeskens. Footballer Neeskens Kebano is named after Johan Neeskens, his father being a big fan of the former Dutch international. Johan Neeskens is the father of singer Neeskens.
