Left to work in Algeria, the Neeskens legend dies there

Algeria Football – It’s a dark day for football fans, especially in the Netherlands. Legendary midfielder Johan Neeskens died on Monday at the age of 73. The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) announced the sad news in a statement: “The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) was shocked yesterday morning by the news of the sudden death of Johan Neeskens at the age of 73. In recent days he was in Algeria, working for the KNVB WorldCoaches program, where he fell ill. Unfortunately, medical help could not do anything for him. »

Neeskens, an iconic figure in world football, is best known for his exploits with Ajax Amsterdam, with whom he won three Champions Cups in a row in 1971, 1972 and 1973. He also made history by being runner-up of two World Cups with the Netherlands in 1974 and 1978. A talented and robust midfielder, he formed a legendary duo with Johan Cruyff, contributing to the glory years of Ajax Amsterdam and FC Barcelona.

Beyond his playing career, Neeskens was involved in training, notably as assistant to the Dutch selection and Barça under the direction of Frank Rijkaard. In recent years, he has dedicated himself to an equally important role: helping to train coaches in less developed countries through the KNVB’s WorldCoaches program, illustrating his commitment to the development of football beyond European borders.

His death in Algeria, where he was participating in a training mission, leaves a huge void in the world of football. Johan Neeskens will forever remain a legend, a man who marked the history of sport while devoting his last years to the development of young talents.
