Madonna pays tribute to her brother Christopher

Madonna paid a long tribute to her brother Christopher Ciccone, who died at the age of 63 from cancer.

The pop icon shared numerous photos of the two of them on Instagram to accompany a poignant message.

“My brother Christopher is no longer here. He was the closest human being to me for so long. Our bond is hard to explain, but it was born from this understanding that we were different and that society was going to give us a hard time for not following the status quo. We held hands and danced through the madness of our childhood. In fact, dancing was a kind of superglue that held us together. Discovering dance in our small Midwestern town saved me, and then my brother came along, and it saved him too. My ballet teacher created a safe space for my brother to be gay, a word that wasn’t spoken or even whispered where we lived,” the Material Girl began.

“When I finally had the courage to go to New York to become a dancer, my brother followed me. We held hands again and danced through the craziness of New York City! We danced through the madness of the AIDS epidemic. We went to funerals, we cried and we went dancing,” she continues.

Christopher Ciccone worked closely with his sister early in her career, serving as artistic director of her Blond Ambition world tour in 1990 and as tour manager of The Girlie Show in 1993. He published his memoir, Life With My Sister Madonna, in 2008, which became a bestseller. They reportedly argued about its content.

“The last few years have not been easy. We didn’t speak for a while, but when my brother got sick, we found our way back to each other… We closed our eyes and we danced. Together. I’m glad he’s no longer in pain. There will never be anyone like him. I know he’s dancing somewhere,” Madonna concludes her tribute.

Madonna was already struck by grief ten days ago, with the death of her mother-in-law Joan Ciccone.
