The start of the university year brings its share of information symptomatic of the state of our societies. After the Sorbonne Nouvelle and its courses queer decolonialists, this is the University of Liège – ULiège, for short – and its wokism. The “Transition and Sustainability” course, innovation of the year 2024-2025, brought out a nugget…
The course in question is divided into multiple lessons. Including this one, from Pierre Stassart: “We have entered the Anthropocene! » BV was able to obtain it. We read there that there is “a scientific consensus on the degradation of the Earth’s habitable conditions and on man’s responsibility”. The man? Let’s get along well. It is not about “the action of a species which could make one believe that the origin of the shift is humanity when it is the white, Christian, heterosexual “Western” man”. The professor describes some aspects of this evil: capitalism, colonization or patriarchy… In any case, the white man, “to put it simply”.
A risky statement?
Surprised, even shocked, some students reported this teaching to the Member of Parliament of Wallonia-Brussels Stéphanie Cortisse (Reform Movement), president of the Committee on Education and the Promotion of Scientific Research. She protests: “What do skin color, religion and sexual orientation have to do with it? ! » This is, she says again, “skull stuffing”. There is this: this transversal course is compulsory for all students enrolled in a bachelor’s degree, whether they study law, literature, architecture or another of the eleven subjects taught…
What’s more, this ecological guilt of “the white, Christian, heterosexual man” East “discriminatory”as Stéphanie Cortisse states, since it is “a simple assertion which is in no way supported”. ULiège may say that the course is based “on cutting-edge scientific research”concocted by fifty-four « experts »we are in the presence of a postulate reminiscent of wokism.
A university in full “progress”
But what to expect from the University of Liège? To hell with philosophy, sociology or veterinary medicine, the university seems obsessed with “Social and environmental transition”. And by the “refugees” (understand: migrants, illegal immigrants), to whom it gives access to courses with all the required facilities. As for native Belgians, they can console themselves by taking another course – “From international migrations to superdiversity” (sic) – to learn to “deconstruct certain myths”always “based on scientific arguments”.
On the Palestinian question, the rector was able to reassure the students at the end of May, while the most militant among them occupied the central building of the university: no, ULiège is not involved in any partnership with Israel and “has no intention of engaging in it. » Phew! Ecology, migrations, Palestine, what is missing? The genre. Well, on October 11 the Gender and Equality Council’s back-to-school conference will take place. On the menu: “What kind(s) of author are you? Authorship, power relations and (in)visibility in the world of research. »
Let us thank this professor from the University of Liège who, in one formula, synthesized wokism with this sketch of the ideal culprit: “the white, Christian, heterosexual “Western” man”. All the ingredients are there – racism, Christianophobia and sexism – without forgetting the essential masochism.
