Death of Sammy Basso, the oldest patient in the world suffering from premature aging

Sammy Basso, an Italian suffering from progeria (or Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome), a disease of premature aging, died at the age of 28, many public figures lamented on Sunday, saluting his courage in his fight against the disease . A post published on his Instagram account also announced his death.

Last night, October 5th, Sammy Basso passed away suddenly after a day of celebration surrounded by the affection of those who loved him. We are deeply grateful for the privilege of sharing a part of our journey with him. He taught us all that, although life’s obstacles may sometimes seem insurmountable, it is worth living it to the full. On behalf of Sammy Basso’s family, friends and the Italian Progeria Association, we thank everyone for their support. The date and location of the funeral will be announced in the next few days. Out of respect for our pain, we kindly ask that you grant us privacy during this difficult time.

According to Italian media, he was the oldest person in the world with the disease, with a life expectancy at birth of around 13 years. Sammy Basso was having dinner with friends when he felt unwell, according to the Italian press.

Tributes are multiplying on social networks. “Sammy Basso was an extraordinary example of courage, faith and positive spirit. He faced every challenge with a smile, proving that the strength of the soul can overcome all obstacles,” wrote head of government Giorgia Meloni on X. She also said: “His commitment to progeria research and his ability to inspire others will forever be a role model.”

Born on December 1, 1995 in northern Italy, Sammy Basso studied at university in Padua (Veneto), where he specialized in molecular biology in 2021. His thesis focused on clarifying the relationship between inflammation and progeria, according to the daily La Repubblica.
