The British actress was inspired by the photographer, model, muse and first war reporter, to the point of fighting for eight years to give birth to the film Lee Miller, directed by Ellen Kuras, of which she is also the producer. What attracted you to Lee Miller?

I knew her photos, I had read her son’s book, The Lives of Lee Miller, and I knew that she had been a model, muse and companion of Man Ray, and a great fashion photographer. But nothing was known about the woman and the mother. I admit that I was very surprised that no film had been dedicated to him, so I contacted his son, Penrose, born from his union with the surrealist painter Roland Penrose. He told me that many filmmakers had wanted to make a film about her, in vain, because they had not been able to understand who she really was. She had multiple lives and I wanted to discover the little-known aspects of her personality.

So you worked with him and had access to private archives…

The first thing I did was go to Antony’s house and see the house in Sussex where Lee lived and died. There, I had access to everything, absolutely everything. We even found his army uniform, neatly folded in a box. It was unbelievable! I read her intimate letters thanks to her son, who trusted me to tell his mother’s true story.
