Stade Rennais – Monaco: loses again, this time at home

For the 7th day of Ligue 1, Rennes hosted Monaco at Roazhon Park and lost by one goal.

Rennes 1-2 Monaco

Stade Rennes wanted to end on a positive note before the international break, the second of the season. After a correction made in , the Breton club hosted Monaco, a team in good form at the start of the championship, having snatched a draw from Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League four days earlier.

Three goals in 22 minutes

For this anticipated match, Benjamin Bourigeaud was present at Roazhon Park, a month after his transfer to Al Duhail, celebrated by the public and honored with a fresco then a tifo. The meeting was obviously marked by the context of the week, Olivier Cloarec having been disembarked the day before by the shareholder, and replaced by Arnaud Pouille, present at the stadium. Still in 3-4-3, Julien Stéphan lined up more recruits this time: Faye, Kamara, Ostigard, Hateboer and Gronbaek started.

And from the 5th minute Rennes conceded a goal from a set piece. From a corner, Kehrer took a cross from Ben Seghir, and Matusiwa propelled the ball into his own goals (5th). After a long consultation with the VAR, the goal was awarded. Rennes reacted immediately with Blas, author of a marvelous strike from 25m into the top corner of Kohn! 1-1!

Well into their match, Rennes took possession and twice Ben Seghir approached the goal but was caught at the last moment. But in a classy sequence, Balogun took the ball and ate Ostigard to finish with a little dive in front of Mandanda (22nd). 2-1 for Monaco.

Moved to the duel, Rennes reacted feverishly. Matusiwa saw his shot blocked (32nd), Truffert his shot diverted by Kohn (45+4th). Rennes then lost Gronbaek to injury, and returned to the locker room trailing and overwhelmed.

Sans solution

Back on the pitch, the SRFC was still suffering, Monaco showing itself to be enterprising. Ben Seghir hit the bar (48th), and Kalimuendo responded with a shot on the post after a good counter (48th). Rennes showed very little danger or imprecise, like Faye who did not fit (55th) just like Kamara (57th). The game was stopped for a long time following Balogun’s injury.

Rennes made several changes and in the pouring rain were unable to find the fault. Assignon’s cross was deflected over the goal (70th). The minutes passed, the changes piled up but Rennes still did not appear incisive, even if Gomez and Jota brought new life. Assignon was still not on target (86th), and the SRFC was heading towards another defeat.

At the end of a week marked by a change of presidency, Stade Rennes lost for the 4th time in 7 days, the first time in its stadium. Before the international break, the Breton club is in bad shape.
