Why Caoimhin Kelleher wasn’t in Liverpool squad after Alisson injury

With Alisson forced off the field through injury, Vitezslav Jaros made his Liverpool debut against Crystal Palace, in the absence of usual substitute goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Alisson made way for Jaros late in the Reds’ 1-0 win at Selhurst Park, after appearing to aggravate a previous hamstring injury.

It was another blow for the Brazilian, but a chance for the academy graduate to attract attention as he helped secure another victory.

Jaros is part of the first team this season after a double-winning loan spell at Sturm Graz last season, but is currently positioned as third choice.

However, he was called up on Saturday with Kelleher missing from the squad due to illness.

Liverpool confirmed the news before kick-off, with the Irishman staying away from his team-mates in order to recover ahead of the October international break.

Kelleher will join the Republic of Ireland squad for the UEFA Nations League clashes with Finland and Greece, before likely replacing Alisson when club soccer resumes.

The 25-year-old was due to leave Anfield over the summer, but with no club reaching Liverpool’s price tag, he stayed behind for another campaign.

He has already been required twice due to a previous injury to Alisson and is now expected to start against Chelsea on October 20.

Jaros will also remain in reserve, the Czech not being called up for the international team this month.

Liverpool are likely to await the results of a scan of Alisson’s hamstring before a verdict is reached on the injury, but he will almost certainly withdraw from the Brazil squad and could miss several weeks.
